With broken hearts and deep love, we remember Samuel James Barrett (“Sam”), 21, who passed away on February 18, 2026.
Born on April 17, 2004, in Jacksonville, Florida, Sam was raised in Ponte Vedra Beach, where he attended elementary, middle, and high school, building lifelong friendships and leaving a quiet but lasting impression on all who knew him. He was a senior at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, pursuing a degree in Investment and Financial Engineering at the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business, where he earned a place on the Honor Roll. Sam worked hard, thought deeply, and approached his future with determination and intelligence.
Those who loved Sam knew his unmistakable dry sense of humor and impeccable timing. Even on difficult days, he could deliver the perfectly placed sideways comment that eased tension and brought laughter. He carried more than most people realized, yet he continued to show up for others with wit, loyalty, and heart.
Sam found peace in the outdoors. The ocean was a place of renewal for him — surfing the waves and feeling the salt air on his face. He loved hiking in the mountains, pushing himself forward step by step, and he felt alive on the basketball court, chasing the rhythm of the game he loved. These moments reflected who he was: steady, thoughtful, and quietly passionate.
His faith grounded him, providing strength and perspective. His family anchored him, offering unconditional love and belonging. He cherished those bonds deeply.
Sam was preceded in death by his grandfather, Samuel Wayne Floyd, whom he loved dearly.
He is survived by his mother, Monica Floyd Barrett of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; his father, Jason Barrett of Washington, DC; his brothers, Jack Barrett of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Lochlan Barrett of Jacksonville, FL; his grandmother, Tina Floyd of Gainesville, FL; his grandparents, Barry and Maureen Barrett of Jacksonville, FL; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him beyond words. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his love and memory will remain constant.
A memorial service to honor Sam’s life will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Christ Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Jacksonville — a cause reflecting Sam’s gentle heart.
May his memory be a blessing, and may he rest in peace.
