Murder-Suicide Reported at Alabama Hospital Shortly After Birth of Couple’s First Child

A tragic domestic incident unfolded Sunday night at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital, where a 24-year-old woman was fatally shot and her 19-year-old husband died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound just moments after the birth of their first child.

According to Homewood Police Department, officers responded around 9:25 p.m. on March 1 to reports of shots fired at the hospital’s Women’s Medical Center on Medical Center Drive. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate the shooting was a domestic-related incident and an apparent murder-suicide. Officials confirmed there were no additional injuries reported, and no ongoing threat to patients, staff, or the public.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Precious Elicia J’anae Johnson, 24, of Birmingham, and Kynath William Terry Jr., 19, of Midfield. Johnson, who had been admitted as a patient at the Women’s Medical Center, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Terry, identified as a visitor, died from what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Media reports from New York Post, citing local outlet WTVM 13, indicate that Johnson had delivered a healthy baby shortly before the shooting occurred. The newborn was not injured in the incident.

Family members expressed shock in the aftermath. Terry’s mother told reporters she was aware the couple had experienced marital difficulties but said she never anticipated the situation would escalate to violence. Authorities confirmed that Terry had recently completed training with the Army National Guard prior to marrying Johnson.

In a public statement, hospital officials said law enforcement responded immediately and secured the facility. The hospital was placed on temporary lockdown as a precautionary measure. Officials emphasized that there was no active threat beyond the incident itself.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
